Former Giants GM Ernie Accorsi advised Cardinals in coaching search

After parting ways with Steve Wilks after just one season, the Arizona Cardinals once again found themselves in the market for a new head coach entering 2019.

Looking to avoid making another poor hire (hindsight is always 20/20) and setting their franchise back further, the Cardinals turned to former New York Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi for a little help.

Arizona Central reports that Cardinals president Michael Bidwill reached out to Accorsi because of his deep ties to Michael’s father, Bill.

Bidwill turned to Ernie Accorsi, the former longtime NFL executive and a trusted confidant of Bidwill’s father, Bill.

Bidwill mentioned Accorsi by name during his opening remarks on Wednesday when Kingsbury was formally introduced as the Cardinals’ new coach. He said Accorsi was “a great value in terms of helping us with this search.”

“I talked with him multiple times, I gave him regular updates and we talked quite a bit about his philosophy about building a championship team and also about hiring coaches,” Bidwill said. “I thought his input was incredibly valuable.”

Accorsi is no stranger to advising teams in both their coaching and general manager searches, having played a similar role last year after the Giants had fired Jerry Reese and before they hired Dave Gettleman. And he’ll no doubt be present in the future should another such situation arise.
