Jarrett Stidham ‘wouldn’t mind’ playing Sam Darnold role for Giants

The New York Giants have tinkered around with young quarterbacks for the better part of the past two seasons, drafting both Davis Webb and Kyle Lauletta after their dominant Senior Bowl performances.

Might 2019 take a similar path?

The Giants are once again well-represented at the Senior Bowl and are believed to be interested in the talents of Drew Lock and Daniel Jones, but there are other quarterbacks in Mobile worthy of keeping an eye on.

Case in point, Auburn’s Jarrett Stidham, who already had what he called a “really good” meeting with Giants general manager Dave Gettleman & Co.

“They’re getting to know me a little bit, I’m getting to know them,” Stidham said via the New York Post. “Just about every meeting, try to get a feel for why I decided to transfer and why I decided to sit out, just that whole process, really trying to figure it all out. Why I did what I did.”

If the Giants do ultimately pass on a quarterback in Round 1 of the 2019 NFL Draft, Stidham may then come into play for them. And although he’d like to come in and start immediately, essentially taking on the Sam Darnold role for Big Blue, he’d also be okay with learning behind Eli Manning.

“The first thing is obviously I’m a competitor, so I want to go in and play right away,” he said. “On the flip side, if something like that is the case, if my role is to be the number two guy, then that’s my role on the team and I’ve got to do it at the highest level possible. I’ve got to be the best number two guy in the world, so to speak.

“[Playing in New York] would be great. I wouldn’t mind that at all.”

Stidham, who compared himself to San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, had a solid college career, but may not be the franchise signal caller the Giants are looking for. Either way, it’s hard not to respect his drive and positive attitude.
