Vanderbilt quarterback Kyle Shurmur, who is the son of New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur, will not participate in the College Gridiron Showcase, which is currently being held in Forth Worth, Texas.
The New York Daily News reports that Shurmur privately reached out to the College Gridiron Showcase director when he ultimately made the decision to sit out.
Kyle Shurmur contacted the CGS director and amicably backed out of the five-day, OTA-style showcase, according to sources, in order to rest up and heal after getting knocked around a bit in a 45-38 Texas Bowl loss to Baylor on Dec. 27.
Kyle will be an intriguing name leading up to the 2019 NFL Draft not just because his father is a head coach and talent evaluator, but because the Giants are in need of a young quarterback to eventually take over for Eli Manning.
It’s a thought that has not escaped the mind of Pat Shurmur.
“I don’t know. I think [playing for the Giants] be hard on his mom,” Shurmur told Newsday in late December. “He’d be home a lot.”
Although Shurmur quipped, he admitted that he’d allow other talent evaluators to make their own determinations on Kyle as opposed to pushing his son on them.
“I think that’s the fairest way to do this thing,” Shurmur added. “I’ve always stayed out of it. I haven’t called Vanderbilt one time in his tenure there to talk anything football. [Head coach] Derek Mason and [Andy] Ludwig and [Gerry] Gdowski, the coaches that have worked with him, they’ve done an excellent job, and that’s his world. That’s for him.
“I guide him on little things like body language when there’s an incomplete pass, the camera goes right to you. I guide him on things like that, but I think all along, his coaches have done an excellent job of coaching him, but to the process. Now going through the [draft evaluation] process, I’ll have some pointers I can give him.”
While Kyle will not participate in the College Gridiron Showcase, he may still participate in the 2019 NFL Combine should he receive an invite. And there’s little doubt that his Dad would be right there in the stands watching him (among others).
