New York Giants among league-worst in 2019 QB Confidence Index

What the New York Giants have and what they will do at the quarterback position will be among the hottest offseason topics league-wide.

Currently, general manager Dave Gettleman has offered no real indication of his thinking heading into the new league year, telling reporters in his post-regular season press conference that he still believes Eli Manning can play at a high level, but failing to commit to him moving forward.

The Giants could look to a rather thin free agent market, but with precious few options, the best available quarterbacks are sure to command contracts that exceed their true on-field value.

There’s also the 2019 NFL Draft, but that, too, is considered a weaker class than just a year ago and a weaker class than the one expected in 2020.

Because of the uncertainty surrounding Manning, the Giants and the quarterback position, the team’s 2019 QB Confidence Index is, unsurprisingly, near the bottom of the league.

In the recently published ESPN index, the Giants are ranked No. 28 overall ahead of just the Washington Redskins, Miami Dolphins and Denver Broncos.

28. New York Giants

We’ve entered the portion of the list where the teams really have no idea what they’re doing at the position. The Giants could bring Eli Manning back for a 16th season, but he probably has to take a pay cut for that to happen, and they don’t have a replacement in place. Check back in a couple of months to see what free agency and/or the draft have done to this ranking, but for now, the Giants’ quarterback situation has to be counted as a mystery.

Humorously, the Cincinnati Bengals, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Oakland Raiders all breed more confidence than do the Giants despite appearing to be in more significant quarterback flux. But Eli Manning is nothing if not a magnet for doubt and criticism.
