New York Giants place Jawill Davis on IR, promote Alonzo Russell

The New York Giants placed a wide receiver on injured reserve (IR) on Saturday, effectively ending their season, but it wasn’t Odell Beckham Jr. or Russell Shepard, who are both out on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys.

Rather, the Giants place Jawill Davis on IR after he apparently suffered a knee injury at practice this week. In his place, the team promoted wide receiver Alonzo Russell from their practice squad.

Davis signed with the Giants as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Bethune–Cookman in April and initially landed on their practice squad. However, after running back Jonathan Stewart was placed on IR, Davis was promoted to the 53-man roster, where he had remained until Saturday.

In seven games this season, Davis hauled in four receptions for 40 yards, but his primary contributions came on special teams where he returned 12 punts for 89 yards, seven kickoffs for 171 yards and recorded two tackles.

Davis is expected to be healthy enough to participate in the team’s offseason activities once they begin.

In Davis’ absence, it’s possible that Corey Coleman takes over as the primary return man, although Alonzo Russell may also step into that role. Sterling Shepard could also return punts if the team becomes desperate.

There was no immediate corresponding transaction to fill the empty space on the Giants’ practice squad. They may opt to leave that spot empty given that the season will officially come to an end as of Monday morning.
