New York Giants’ playoff hunt continues: Week 15 rooting guide

The New York Giants still have a heartbeat entering Week 15 of the 2018 regular season despite a horrendous 1-7 start to the year. But after going 4-1 since returning from their bye, they find themselves with a very slim potential path to a wildcard game against the Chicago Bears.

In order for that improbable miracle to come to fruition however, the Giants need a significant number of things to go their way, beginning with a slate of games this coming Sunday.

As long as the Giants take care of business against the Tennessee Titans, they will live to fight at least one more week. But in order to actually make the playoffs, several other teams will have to lose more than once over the final three weeks.

With that in mind, here’s a quick breakdown of which teams you should be cheering on this weekend and which ones you should be rooting against:

  • Giants vs. Titans (root: Giants, duh)
  • Green Bay Packers vs. Chicago Bears (root: Bears)
  • Detroit Lions vs. Buffalo Bills (root: Bills)
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Baltimore Ravens (root: Ravens)
  • Miami Dolphins vs. Minnesota Vikings (root: Dolphins)
  • Washington Redskins vs. Jacksonville Jaguars (root: Jaguars)
  • Philadelphia Eagles vs. Los Angeles Rams (root: Rams)
  • New Orleans Saints vs. Carolina Panthers (root: Panthers)

As noted previously, if the Giants lose against the Titans, nothing else in Week 15 matters. However, if you assume a victory for the sake of what else is needed, the above list covers it all.

The Buccaneers and Lions aren’t too dire when it comes to the Giants’ needs, but a loss by both teams would clear up some of the traffic jam that currently exists.

Meanwhile, the Packers and Redskins each need to lose one game over their final three, while the Vikings, Eagles and Panthers all need to lose two.

Looking ahead to Week 17, it all seems highly unlikely. But if you take it a week at a time, the opportunity is genuinely there. And beginning this Sunday, it’s entirely possible that immediate outside needs fall in the Giants’ favor.
