Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins, who was a Heisman finalist this year and named an AP Third-Team All American, grew up as a huge New York Giants fan and realizes there’s an outside possibility he could soon be playing for his favorite childhood team.
Although the Giants are dropping in the 2019 NFL Draft order thanks in part to their recent surge and the fact that Haskins, who grew up in Highland Park, New Jersey, hasn’t decided whether or not to declare, he feels like the two sides would be a “perfect fit.”
“It would be pretty nice,” Haskins told the New York Post. “I played ‘Madden’ a lot, and [Tiki Barber] was really good running the football. The whole offense was nice. Plaxico [Burress], Jeremy Shockey, Eli [Manning], Ahmad Bradshaw. I was basically the stats guy from my family. I would know everybody’s height and weight, what college they went to.
“I’ve been a Giants fan for a long time.”
If Haskins does declare for the 2019 NFL Draft, there’s going to be substantial interest from a number of teams. He not only led the Buckeyes to a Big Ten title, but also set all-time conference records in in touchdown passes (47) and passing yards (4,580) to go along with just eight interceptions.
In the event Haskins does decide to declare, he’ll likely be considered a mid- to late-first round draft pick behind top quarterbacks Justin Herbert and Drew Lock. And given how far down the draft order New York has fallen, that would put them within striking distance of the strong-armed Ohio State gunslinger.
